Year Model Commentary
1996 Ligier Mugen Honda JS43 The JS43 raced in 32 entries over the 16 races in 1996 - with a high 50% DNF rate, though collecting 15 points along the way. The major accomplishment of this car was Panis' win in Monaco when all the top contenders dropped out - resulting in the team's first victory in almost 15 years. The Frank Dernie designed car covered 3940 miles in over 1336 laps, leading 16 of those laps at Monaco.
1986-1987 Williams Honda FW11, FW11B The claim of the Williams FW-11 as the dominant car of the 1986 season the Williams FW-11 is without question. In the hands of the likes of Piquet and Mansell it often appeared as if the car could win with ease, on virtually every type of track.
Helped considerably by the powerful V6 Honda turbo engine the FW-11 was an advanced piece of machinery that drew heavily on space technology, especially in the area of ceramic coating of components subject to intense heat. Despite the internal battles with the team the FW11 easily secured the constructors' championship for Frank and his squad in 1986.

For 1987 the team field a 'B' variant which included uprating the cooling system. Seven FW-11Bs were built and all carried the revised Honda V6 that soon proved to be more powerful and much more fuel-efficient. Another major step forward came in the re-active suspension system that was introduced at Monza. At the end of the season not only hand Williams secured another constructors' title, their drivers were also first and second in the championship with Piquet edging Mansell out after the latter crashed heavily during practise for the Japanese Grand Prix.

Designed by Patrick Head and Frank Dernie, the FW11/11B entered 64 times over the 2 years' 32 races. THe FW 11/11B captured 18 wins with 18 fast laps and 16 poles while it raced 9917 miles over 3508 laps - leading 3303 of those miles. The FW11/11B hauld in 278 points over the 2 years.

1987 Lotus Honda 99T A change of colour to the yellow and blue of Camel were the obvious reminders that this was a new car while under the skin it looked a lot like the 98T. A switch to Honda power made a heavier car that was also extremely potent. Senna insisted on the use of active suspension and made good use of it to claim two wins during the season.

Lotus and Senna both finished third in their respective championship battles. Designed by Gerard Ducarouge and Marting Ogilvie, the 99T had 32 entries over the 16 race season with only 8 DNFs. 2 wins, 3 Fast Laps and 1 Pole resulted from the 4725 total miles raced (1624 laps) - leading 108 of those laps covering 278 miles.

1991-1992 McLaren Honda MP4-6/MP4-6B The team continued to dominate the field with the Honda powered MP4-6 scoring eight wins. Senna got seven while Berger got the other one. The 'B' variant was only fielded for the first few races of 1992.

The MP4-6 and B variant was entered 36 times over 18 races resulting in 8 wins, 5 Fast Laps and 10 poles. With only 9 DNFs, this car won the respective 1991 World Championships for McLaren Honda and Senna. The MP4-6 and MP4-6B earned 148 points in over 1766 laps covering 5233 miles - leading 502 of those laps (1400 miles).

1989-1990 McLaren Honda MP4-5/MP4-5B Both Prost and Senna owe a title apiece to the MP4-5, Neil Oatley's lovely Honda powered beast that allowed the McLaren team to extend their dominance over the field. The MP4-5 holds the record for pole positions with 27 against 14 for its nearest rival the Williams FW14.

The MP4-5 and 5B variant survived 64 entries in 32 races over 2 years - producing 16 wins, 13 fast lamps and 27 poles! The 16 DNFs did not take much of a toll. The MP4-5 earned 262 points in the 3518 laps covering 10,033 miles - leading 1373 of those laps (3973 miles).

1988 McLaren Honda MP4-4 The winningest F1 car in history in a single season! Steve Nichols and Gordon Murray collaborated to create the car that won 15 from 16 races in a single season the MP4-4 scored an incredible 199 points as Prost and Senna led from the front in every single race of the season. On the surface the car was not that different from previous models although the Honda-supplied powerpack was certainly the most potent package on the grid. Leading 1003 of 1961 laps throughout the season with only 3 DNFs in 32 starts from 15 poles!
1998 Jordan Mugen Honda 198 On the strength of the first half of the 1998 season the 198 was not one of Gary Anderson's best efforts. With the arrival of Mike Gascoyne from Tyrrell the car underwent several major improvements which, coupled with renewed efforts from Goodyear and a beefed-up powerpack from Mugen-Honda saw Damon Hill scoring Jordan's first ever victory at Spa.

Entering 32 times in 16 races, the 198 led 28 of the 1529 laps it raced and earned 34 points in the process - with 11 DNFs for the year.

1999 Jordan Mugen Honda 199 This Mike Gascoyne designed 199 was raced in 1999 with very good results for a privateer - 2 wins and 61 points with 10 DNFs in the 32 starts over the 16 races. In addition, the 199 had 1 fast lap and a pole to its credit. It also led 202 miles of 65 laps.
2000 BAR Honda 002 Honda's reentry into F1 was a 3.0 litre V10 RA000E mounted to a longitudunal 6 speed gearbox in this Malcolm Oastler designed car based on the Reynard BAR carbon fibre chassis with OZ wheels and Koni shocks. Driven by Jacques Villeneuve and Ricardo Zonta, this car did not do very well this year.
